THE PULSE
Europe Boosts Climate Resilience with Ariane 6 Metop-SGA1 Launch
➞ An Ariane 6 rocket carrying an EUMETSAT satellite took off this week as part of the US-led programme Joint Polar System.
Why this matters: “The launch of Metop-SGA1 is a major step forward in giving national weather services in our member states sharper tools to save lives, protect property, and build resilience against the climate crisis,” EUMETSAT director-general Phil Evans told Euractiv.
➞ The U.S. Department of Energy made an initial selection of 11 companies for a pilot program seeking to develop high-tech test nuclear reactors and get at least three of them to begin operating in less than a year.
Key takeaway: The Trump administration’s ambiguity on climate change hasn’t prevented the U.S. from moving fast on nuclear energy, and Europe should take note.
➞ The European Commission plans to dedicate €1.76 billion in 2026 and €1.30 billion in 2027 to research projects relating to the climate transition, clean transportation and sustainable energy use and supply.
To-do: Keep track of the successive rounds of drafting of the Horizon Europe work program for climate, energy and mobility.
